About Recovery Tails Society

Helping people and pets stay connected

Recovery Tails Society is a nonprofit organization that arranges temporary foster care for pets while their people access support. We work toward a simple outcome: people can get the care or housing support they need, and their pets can return to them when the temporary placement ends.

Why we began

RTS grew from seeing people ready to access treatment, hospitalization, recovery supports, or safer housing who had no safe place for their pet to go.

Our founders began building another option with volunteer foster homes, donations, personal contributions, and community support. The work reflects a belief in the connection between people and their pets, and the role that connection can play in healing and wellbeing.

The people behind RTS

Meet Priya

Recovery Tails Society was founded by people working directly in mental health, recovery, and community support.

Priya brings experience in mental health and addictions care, working closely with people navigating complex systems and life transitions. Her commitment to community-based support is at the heart of Recovery Tails.

How we work

We work with pet guardians, foster caregivers, service providers, hospitals, treatment programs, housing providers, and community partners to coordinate temporary care.

Each request is reviewed individually. We consider the animal’s needs, the guardian’s circumstances, and the abilities of available foster homes. Clear communication, thoughtful matching, and reunification planning guide the process.

People remain the legal guardians of their pets. RTS does not take permanent ownership or provide a surrender service.

Our community

Volunteer foster homes make this work possible. Donors, referral partners, and other community supporters help us reach people who need care and provide the resources involved in supporting their pets.

Whether you offer a temporary home, contribute supplies or funding, or help someone make a referral, you have a role in keeping people and pets connected.

The Victoria Pet Care Access Support Program

Supported by a combined $90,000 investment from the City of Victoria and BC Housing, this partnership expands temporary pet care for people living in Victoria who are accessing treatment, recovery supports, hospitalization, or more stable housing.

The program launches October 1, 2026. Our priority during the partnership is Victoria residents, including people who are unhoused. We continue to review requests from other Vancouver Island communities, where wait times may be longer.
