CHEK News shared the story behind Recovery Tails Society, a Vancouver Island nonprofit providing free, temporary pet care for people entering mental health or substance use treatment.
Why temporary pet care matters
For many people, a pet is family. When someone is ready to enter treatment or receive hospital care, not having a safe place for their animal can become a serious barrier. RTS exists to remove that barrier while keeping people and their pets connected.
How RTS supports each placement
RTS reviews each request, assesses the pet’s needs and, when a safe match is possible, coordinates care with a volunteer foster caregiver. The organization supports the placement and helps plan reunification when the owner is ready.
Recovery Tails Society provides free, temporary pet care so people can access treatment, hospitalization, and safer housing without leaving a beloved animal behind.
